lancashire at war.co.uk exploring the hidden history of war sites in lancashire home world war two sites world war one sites cold war sites blog photos what's new contact links search "shop" lancashire museums re-opened over the years we have discovered some lost and forgotten sites from world war two. this got us interested in finding more sites, which led to us discovering sites of different eras here in lancashire (and beyond). in the interest of sharing our discoveries, recording the sites before they are permanently lost and in turn finding more sites from other people interested in this sort of thing - we thought we'd set up a website. "we" are two brothers who have grown up in bury, lancashire. we spend an inordinate amount of time looking at old maps and books and then going out looking for things in the (usually) wet lancashire weather. this site is by no means a complete list of sites from any era. these are sites local to us in lancashire, or are of interest to us. and by "lancashire", we mean the pre-1974, historical version of the county. this included areas such as stockport and liverpool. many are on private land and are not easily accessible. most are not protected by ancient monument status and are therefore at threat of being destroyed. we are concentrating firstly on world war two sites as that is our main era of interest. but we will be adding sites throughout history. did you realise that defensive structures were built throughout lancashire in anticipation of what was seen as an imminent invasion in the 1940's? or that in the first world war, zeppelins flew over and dropped bombs on small lancashire towns? or that we have secret monitoring stations in rural areas awaiting the nuclear bombs being dropped during the cold war? so, we will have prisoner of war camps, anti-aircraft gun sites, crimean war sites, secret cold war sites - all in the lancashire countryside. if you like the romans to the victorians - check out ade's site: http://lancashirepast.wordpress.com/ world war two sites lancashire at war - welcome to our site roadblocks & tank traps pillboxes defensive structures pow & internment camps searchlights & ack ack guns decoy sites bomb sites ghost signs manchester guardian royal ordnance factories a letter home zeppelin attacks secret sites/auxilliary units yorkshire at war page is live see some photos below turton roc site world war one sites cold war sites ww2 decoy site page mellor roc site auxiliary site mellor, stockport search this site padiham air raid shelter cold war sites guardian tunnels, manchester museums, events & exhibitions "the fuse" blackburn and decoy firewatchers blackpool at war on the 100 year anniversary of world war one - the story of harold taylor (m.m.), a bury boy, his war years in photographs and letters home. airfields hms ringtail, burscough burscough roc site ramsbottom's ww1 railways in ww2 railways in ww2 air raid shelters ww1 dazzle ship - liverpool stop line no. 14 - near ormskirk middleton barrage balloon and heywood raf sites lucas green aa gun & pillbox healey dell munitions factory warth mill, bury - pow camp burrs mill, bury - pow camp what's new hapton spigot mortar emplacemen t dazzleships miscellaneous curiosities - the sites we cannot place anywhere else! air raid shelters page raf burtonwood accrington ww2 anti glider trenches rof risley stubbins in ww2 barrage balloon sites miscellaneous curiosities anti-glider trenches spigot mortar site stop line no.14 home guard small arms stores training camps yorkshire at war hameldon hill decoy site hare hill house, littleborough a rawtenstall dazzleship home guard tragedy at holcombe museum page horwich loco works preston cold war bunkers tanks etc. holly mount preston station - ww1 the wrong lostock? backbone backbone tanks in halliwell erp (emergency rendezvous points) harold taylor (mm) harold taylor (mm) - his story the last accrington pal walney island barrow roc anti-invasion defences zeppelin bomb crater ramsbottom erps decontamination centres drinkwater & philips parks h bury school's cold war secret radcliffe at war lowercroft recollections glen mill pow camp western approaches, liverpool inglis ww1 bridge civil defence in the cold war becconsall's bombs a ww2 comforts fund coastal forces monument dick kerr - ww1 munitions a charity shop find crimean range, bury a ww2 preston secret ww2 rubble on beach lancashire at war blog page - click here to see it these pages, all text and photographs, unless stated, are the copyright of the brothers b. no reproduction is allowed in any form without prior written permission
